The quiet performers of promotional print
Desk items do not impress anyone at the moment they are handed over, and that is rather the point. A sticky pad sits on a desk for weeks and shows your logo on every sheet, so one item delivers dozens of impressions to the same person over time. Very little else at this price stays in front of someone that long.

Sheet count is the decision that matters
Most buyers pick a size and ignore the sheet count, which is backwards. A 25 sheet pad is cheaper per unit but is used up in a couple of weeks of ordinary work. A 50 sheet pad costs a little more and roughly doubles the time your logo spends on the desk.
If you are handing pads out at an event and want volume, 25 sheets is defensible. If the recipient is a client or a prospect you want to stay in front of, the 50 sheet version is almost always the better buy — you are paying a few cents for another month of visibility.
Size, and where the pad ends up
The small formats — 2" x 3" and 2-3/4" x 3" — are cheap enough for mass handouts and fit in a delegate pack without bulk. The 3" x 3" is the familiar desk square and the safest default. The 3" x 8" is a different tool: a long strip suited to lists and phone messages, and it takes a much larger imprint, which makes it the best choice if your logo has any detail to it.
The magnetic notepad is worth singling out. It sticks to a filing cabinet, a fridge or a metal partition rather than lying flat, so it stays visible to a room rather than to one person. For trades, service businesses and anyone who wants their number found in a hurry, that is a meaningfully different job.
Printing on paper stock
Paper takes ink well, so this is one of the more forgiving surfaces in the catalogue — you get a larger imprint area and better colour reproduction than on a pen barrel. Use it. A phone number, a web address or a short line of positioning is legible here in a way it would not be on a pen.
Keep the bottom of the sheet clear where you can. People write over the middle, and anything placed there disappears the moment the pad is used.
